Oatman

This is some of Oatman's residents. The baby burro, Chilipepper was only 3 days old when Ray and I came through on our way back from Laughlin. Mama & Chilipepper

Oatman, an old mining town located on old Route 66 southwest of Kingman is a lot like it was in the rip- roaring days when mining was king. The wooden sidewalks, rustic buildings and remnants of rusted mining shacks surrounding the tiny community of a couple hundred citizens takes you back in time. Burros have resided in the hills around Oatman for decades, they are descendants of their burrows who belonged to the miners. When the mining era ended, the burros were turned loose in the barren mountains to fend for themselves. Today they roam the streets mingling with tourists who purchase carrots and other food to feed the little beggars. Although it is not desert terrain, summer time heat can be sizzling and each 4th of July an egg frying contest is held on the sidewalks. Gunfights can still be witnessed on weekends. There is a lot of history in Oatman, well worth the trip on the winding mountain road to enjoy a taste of the old west.
